To start, a slab is rolled and smoothed, and the circular base is cut out of the slab. Then coils are rolled and placed in position on the base. In order to maintain the coil shapes on the outside, only the inside of the vase is smoothed to connect the pieces to the base and to each other.
A good coil has a symmetrical, cylindrical shape and is even in thickness along the length of the whole coil.
The main design I included was taking a long coil and folding it into a spiral shape. However, the design was more rectangular and less round. I also added short, straight coils as smaller details around the main design and a long coil all around the top to finish off the vase.
