My favorite project to create was the sgraffito plate. I feel the final product turned out as my best project of the year. I enjoyed the project because it combined many techniques learned over the semester and was a project that contained the most intricate design and most amount of detail.
I struggled at the beginning of the year when we first learned to make pinch pots. I have never worked with clay before, so I was unhappy with many of my attempts and wound up starting over again and again. I was able to overcome this struggle by simply practicing. The more I worked with the clay, the easier it became to shape the piece to my liking and the better I felt about the end result.
I first walked into the class not knowing anything about ceramics and its techniques. I first learned how to make a simple pinch pot and later moved on to more complex techniques like slab rolling, coil making, and scratching and attaching. I progressed from an uneven, lobsided pot to a complex plate and detailed monster mug. I came into the class skeptical as to whether or not I would have fun, but am leaving with a new appreciation for the class and ceramics as a whole.
