The first step in making a sgraffito plate is to roll a large slab and place it over the plate mold. Using a rib, the slab should be fitted to the slab and the excess clay should be cut off. After the clay has a short time to start to harden, the mold should be removed and the top of the plate should be smoothed. 3 coats of black paint are then applied and the inspiration image is traced on the plate. Finally, the paint should be carved away to reveal the image and the piece can be fired and glazed.
A successful sgraffito plate is made with sides of even thickness and smooth edges. Additionally, while scratching the piece, make sure to remove all of the paint and not dig too deep with the tools.
I chose the Chicago Cubs as my inspiration because they are my favorite Chicago sports team.
